[Texty Texty]

I can feel it coming. I know we’re going to talk about actual in-person interaction with clients in one of my next classes. You know, the kind that happens face-to-face or over the phone, rather than by email or text.

What? A voice conversation with a prospective client?

This is something I struggle with. This is something I want to avoid, and act like it’s normal to avoid. It’s so much easier to get a text from someone saying their interested, than to have a conversation with them. Too many opportunities to make an idiot out of myself, and to give discounts, and not remember my prices (or my services, for that matter). Email and text is like a buffer between me and awkwardness. I can take the time to say things right, to spell out how things will run down. And I don’t have to play phone tag.

But it’s just not the best way to do things from start to finish. And I know it. I’m looking forward to getting some insight on the type of conversations that should happen face-to-face or over the phone vs what should be emailed or texted. There’s nothing weirder or more impersonal than showing up to a shoot having never spoken to or met my client.

Guess I’ll have to work on that.

What about you guys? Do you prefer to do business by text/email, or by phone/in person?

manda-rae - Personally, I prefer text and email because it's just easier (and it is impersonal). However, if I want to know that the person I'm communicating with is a person, then I need to call him/her. Talking over the phone is awkward at first, but it helps make it more personal. And that hold a lot more value over a text.

Rach - I'm a phone talker. It's so much quicker and efficient. plus, I find there is less miscommunication when you can hear a person's fluctuation and sarcasm (or lack thereof). and generally, I find a phone call much more professional.

although, I will admit there are definitely times when texting is appropriate and/or easier. like if you're just exchanging information about an address or the like. orrr if you already know the person well enough. but overall, I think a phone call exudes more confidence and professionalism.

Kerry Hoaglund - I have the same issues with talking on the phone…I feel like I won't remember things if they aren't written down somewhere. I like paper trails and texting/email is SO much easier for me!!! I know it's sad that the world has come to hardly any actual face to face conversations anymore but honestly for me texting is so much easier!!
