What is Beloved?

My favorite sessions are Beloved sessions, and I’ve had a lot of people ask what exactly they are. So I’m dedicating a whole blog post to letting everyone know! When I discovered the concept, I had to learn as much as possible about it, as fast as I could, because it’s so unique. I’ve spent the last few years adding the technique into my practice, and most sessions usually incorporate at least a little bit of Beloved as part of my norm.

“Beloved” is a photographic technique created by Jesh de Rox, and you can find more info about it here at the Beloved Collective, if you’re a photographer and interested. For the rest of you, a Beloved session is an exploration and celebration of relationships. It’s different than a typical photo session that involves posing and backdrops. A beloved session involves spending time with your partner and loved ones, your family, or even yourself or friends, exploring your relationships, talking, thinking, feeling, and honoring your connections.

As the photographer, I prepare for a Beloved session by getting to know my subjects a little beforehand, talking and filling out questionnaires. We decide on a location and feel of a session based on you and your interests, so you won’t find yourself with an album full of photos of you and your family next to a random brick wall for no reason. Honestly, the location is the least important part; you and your relationships will be the center of attention. I may ask a couple to come prepared with something specific to talk about or to share, like a favorite memory, a love note, or a song that reminds them of their partner. And when we meet, we’ll take a minute to get in the zone, and get ready to spend an hour loving, listening, and feeling.

I give general guidance as to how to pose your bodies :) This session is about YOU, so I mostly want you to physically interact with your loved one like you normally would. What I love about Beloved is that the subjects make it what it is. I want to catch you doing what you normally do, acting together how you normally act. I help you look your best in tiny ways, while you think about what’s most important to you.

I prompt you to talk or think about certain things, and snap away as you laugh, think, cry, and remember why you love the person you’re standing next to. I’ll also prompt you to participate in little games or gestures. The best part about Beloved is that you’ll never be asked to smile for the camera! And you’ll never be asked to give the camera “your serious face,” or to look away into the distance for no reason. Your smiles are genuine, and your photos will be too. Your emotions are authentic, because you are actually experiencing something.

There are two amazing and wonderful things that come from a Beloved session:

  1. You’ll have an awesome hour with the people/person you love, remembering why you love them, and rejuvenating your relationship. And…
  2. When you look at the pictures at home, you’ll remember the feelings you had during the session, and experience Beloved over and over again :)

You can find info on scheduling a Beloved session here. Beloved is for people in love and who love; couples (new and old), families of all sizes and ages, friends, and solo-sessions. Everyone has something to celebrate and I don’t discriminate on your type of love. I so look forward to getting to know you, and giving you images you’ll cherish for a long, long time!

Rejuvenate your relationships | Sisters For Sunshine - […] This past weekend, my fiance and I completed an engagement photo session with our lovely photographer. She incorporated techniques for a “Beloved Session“, which ” is an exploration and celebration of relationships. It’s different than a typical photo session that involves posing and backdrops. A beloved session involves spending time with your partner, your family, or even yourself or friends, exploring your relationships, talking, thinking, feeling, and honoring your connections.” (quote from Becky Green Photos) […]

Marina Ivanova - Thank you Becky! If your post dates of 2012, I’ve just discovered it :-) You just put words on the style of photography I’m inclining towards. And you showed us some very beautiful authentic sessions here.
