Let’s Be Real for a Second

The words “family photos” can instantly raise blood pressure. A lot of people have bad experiences coordinating outfits, bribing toddlers, praying for good weather, hoping no one melts down (parent included)... sound familiar?

But here’s the thing: your photo session doesn’t have to be stiff, overly posed, or high-pressure.

In fact, the best family photos usually happen when you loosen your grip a little. When you focus less on saying “cheese” and more on just being together—that’s where the magic lives.

Below are my favorite tips to help your next family photo session feel easy, relaxed, and full of genuine connection.

1. Don’t Pose — Play

Think of your session like a playdate with a bonus photographer. Let the kids lead. Tickle them, swing them, hold hands, and laugh out loud.

Candid, movement-filled moments show who you really are as a family—and they’re way more fun to relive than a stiff, posed photo ever could be.

2. Wear Something You Can Move In

Pick outfits that feel like you. Choose pieces you can bend, run, or snuggle in. Go for textures and layers that you find flattering, but skip anything that needs constant adjusting.

Neutral tones, soft colors, and clothing that moves with the wind? Perfection.

3. Embrace the Chaos

Kids will be kids. There might be snack breaks. Dirt on knees. A random tantrum. It’s okay.

Some of the most memorable photos come from these perfectly imperfect moments. I’ll guide us through the flow, but the magic is often in what we don’t plan.

4. Be Affectionate

Your love is the star of the show. Hug your people. Rub noses. Wrap your arms around someone. That warmth, that connection—that’s what makes your photos yours.

If it feels like you’re being a little extra mushy? You’re doing it right.

5. Let Go of the “Perfect Photo”

You’re not here to impress. You’re here to remember. The way your daughter’s curls caught the light. How your son held your hand without being asked. The way you all laughed together like you do at home.

Let the session unfold. I’ll do the rest.

What You’ll Take Home

Photos that look like you. Not the airbrushed, super-polished version—but the full-hearted, funny, real-life version. That's my favorite kind of photo!
